Secure your campervan for New Zealand

Tell us your travel dates, how many of you there are and which camper you like. You get your personal offer and can book directly. The fleet is in high demand over the summer season, so enquiring early gets you the better vehicles.

The enquiry form is provided by Create A Moment. Loading it passes your IP address to the provider.

How it works

From enquiry to handover in four steps

You are not booking blind through a portal. You get an offer put together for your dates, and you can take your time with it. Nothing is binding until you confirm.

1

Send an enquiry

Your travel dates, the number of people and your preferred model. Two minutes, non-binding, free.

2

Get your offer

We check what is possible for your dates and send you the price with everything included. Usually inside 24 hours.

3

Book and prepare

If it fits, you confirm. Then come your documents plus our tips on routes, campsites and the ferry.

4

Pick up the camper

In Auckland or Christchurch we walk through the vehicle with you: kit, operation, numbers for the road. Then you are off.

Daily price guide

Daily rates swing a lot with the season. The figures below are a rough orientation – your exact price comes with your offer.

Campervan classOff-seasonPeak season
Compact camper (car based)from 49 NZD / dayfrom 75 NZD / day
Self-contained vanfrom 69 NZD / dayfrom 110 NZD / day
Large camperfrom 89 NZD / dayfrom 140 NZD / day

Guide prices including basic insurance. Surcharges can apply depending on rental length, season and add-ons. Not a binding offer.

What is included in every rental

  • Unlimited kilometres on all models, at no extra cost
  • Basic insurance, with a reduced excess available as an add-on
  • A complete camping kitchen: gas stove, pots, dishes, cutlery
  • Camping table and chairs, cooler or fridge depending on model
  • Bedding and blankets on the self-contained models
  • GPS navigation in the vehicle
  • A walkthrough at pick-up and a number to call from the road

What else to budget for

  • Fuel – New Zealand is big; 2,000 to 5,000 km in three to four weeks is normal
  • Campsites – basic DOC sites cost a few dollars, holiday parks with power and showers a lot more
  • The Cook Strait ferry between Wellington and Picton if you drive both islands
  • A one-way fee if pick-up and drop-off are in different cities
  • Optional extras such as reduced excess, an additional driver or a tent
  • Activities, boat trips and shuttles to the trailheads

Season, weather and price level over the year

New Zealand sits in the southern hemisphere. When it is winter at home it is high summer here – and that is exactly what drives the price swings. Handy if you are timing a road trip around a picking or packhouse contract.

Rent or buy? The rule of thumb

It mostly comes down to how long you are on the road. From roughly two months, buying with a guaranteed buyback usually beats any rental – which is why so many working-holiday travellers end up buying.

Driving in New Zealand

  • Driving is on the left. The first roundabouts feel odd, then it is routine after half a day.
  • Plan fewer kilometres per day than at home. Auckland to Wellington is around 650 km and realistically nine to ten hours of driving.
  • Between the islands the ferry runs Wellington–Picton in a good three hours. Book early in peak season, especially with a camper.
  • Many access roads to beaches and trailheads are gravel. Drive slowly, keep your distance, and the windscreen stays intact.
  • On the South Island two petrol stations can be 100 km apart. Filling up at half a tank is the safe rule.
  • Your national licence is valid for up to twelve months. If it is not in English, bring a certified translation or an international permit.

Pick-up & drop-off

Auckland and Christchurch

You collect your camper at one of two airports: Auckland on the North Island or Christchurch on the South Island. Both are good starting points. From Auckland the Coromandel, Rotorua and the Bay of Islands are right there; from Christchurch it is Aoraki / Mount Cook, Queenstown and the West Coast.

At handover we go through the vehicle together: kit, kitchen, water and power, plus the numbers to call from the road. Allow some time for it and plan only a short drive on arrival day – jet lag after a long-haul flight is easy to underestimate.

One-way rentals are possible, for example pick up in Auckland and drop off in Christchurch. Mention it in your enquiry and we factor it in straight away.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Usually inside 24 hours on business days. What matters is your travel dates, the number of people and your pick-up and drop-off location. The more precise your details, the more precise the offer.

Pick-up and drop-off work at Auckland Airport (North Island) and Christchurch Airport (South Island). That lets you start flexibly, including one-way between the islands.

Yes. A one-way rental between Auckland and Christchurch is possible and usually carries an additional fee, which we show you upfront in your offer. For a round trip across both islands this is often the most relaxed option.

By ferry across the Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton. The crossing takes a good three hours and finishes through the Marlborough Sounds. Vehicle spaces are tight in peak season, so book the ferry as early as you can.

All vehicles come with basic insurance, and a reduced excess is available as an add-on. The exact terms are clarified individually as part of your enquiry.

In New Zealand the bond normally requires a credit card in the driver’s name. The amount depends on the vehicle and the insurance package you choose, and it is stated in your offer before you book.

Only with a certified self-contained vehicle, and only where the local council allows it. Always check the signage on site: where freedom camping is banned, fines are handed out consistently. With a compact camper you stay at campgrounds and DOC sites.

Your national licence is enough as long as it is in English. Otherwise bring a certified English translation or an international driving permit. Remember: driving is on the left.

For peak season between December and February, six to twelve months ahead if you can – the good vehicles go early. Off-season, a few months is often enough. A non-binding enquiry is always worth it, even at short notice.

Many travellers budget around 150 to 250 NZD a day for two people, covering camper, fuel, campsite and food. If you mostly use basic DOC sites and cook for yourself you come out considerably cheaper. Activities such as boat trips or scenic flights come on top.

Your documents include the roadside assistance numbers and our direct contact. Get in touch before you have anything repaired yourself, and we work out how to proceed together.
